favorite famous recorded muff tones because of post recording EQ.  We added a 4 way EQ switch that affects how the tone knob works.  Position 1 is the standard mid scooped tone knob that we all know and love.  Position 2 is a flat mids tone knob that you'll find on a lot of the modern boutique Muff clones.  Position 3 is a mid hump tone knob which really cuts through and gives it a real overdrive flavor when you roll back on the guitar's volume knob.  And position 4 is a tone knob bypass, like you'd find on some of the later versions of the Big Muff Pi, but never before on the Triangle or Ram's Head Era versions.  When you take the passive tone stack out of the way, the tone knob bypass offers a huge volume boost with unadulterated vintage muff tone....very \"Why on earth would I buy a kit to build a DS-1 clone when I could mosey on into any Guitar Center, and pick up a real one for $35?\"  The DS-1 currently in production is not the same as the original DS-1 that was produced in the 80's.  Now you're probably asking yourself, \"Why not just get a new DS-1 and modify it or have someone else modify it for me?\" That will make it sound better, but it still won't be the same as the original DS-1.  The original DS-1 used the  Toshiba TA7136P chip.  When this chip became obsolete, BOSS changed the circuit to accommodate dual op amps.  The TA7136P was not a dual op amp.  So simply \"upgrading\" a few parts isn't going to make a DS-1 sound as good as the original.\u003c\/div\u003e\n      \u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\n      \u003c\/div\u003e\n      \u003cdiv\u003e\n        \u003cdiv\u003eThe BYOC Orange Distortion is a spot on recreation of the original DS-1 circuit that used the TA7136P.  The kit comes with a genuine N.O.S. Toshiba TA7136P, higher quality parts than what were used in the originals, extra components to do some of the most popular DS-1 modifications, and a couple of new mods that we've come up with which are the sort of mods you can only do when you're building a pedal from the ground up.\u003c\/div\u003e\n        \u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\n        \u003c\/div\u003e\n        \u003cdiv\u003eOne of these new mods is the addition of a 4th knob, the Pre-Gain knob.  The DS-1 circuit has a transistor based boost at the beginning of the circuit.  It acts exactly the same way as when you stick a boost pedal in front of any dirt pedal - it \"gooses\" the dirt pedal and gives it more distortion.  This transistor based boost at the beginning of the circuit is set to full blast...all the time!  This is why the DS-1 doesn't sound very good at lower gain settings.  We added the Pre-Gain knob so that you can control the level of boosted signal going into the actual distortion part of the circuit.  This mod makes the BYOC Orange Distortion incredibly more flexible and versatile than an original DS-1.\u003c\/div\u003e\n        \u003cdiv\u003e  \u003c\/div\u003e\n        \u003cdiv\u003eAnother new mod is the Big Muff Mod.  This transistor based boost at the beginning of the DS-1 circuit is almost identical to one of the transistor gain stages in an Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi. Where the two circuits really differ though is in the actual distortion circuit. The OD-820 uses Maxon's (and Ibanez's) famous Tubescreamer circuit. This is a huge advantage for DIY-ers since there are many well documented modifications for the Tubescreamer, and most of them apply to the OD-820. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAnother place where the OD-820 circuit differs is in the way its dual-ganged drive knob works. As you turn up the gain on the Centaur, it shunts clean signal to ground. And as you turn down the gain on the Centaur, it shunts the overdrive signal to ground. The Centaur sounds amazing with the gain knob mostly clockwise or mostly counter clockwise, but this method of gain control causes some tone loss when the drive knob is set more towards the middle, the same way adding a master volume control to a tube amp does. It's not much, but it is noticeable, especially when you A\/B it with an OD-820. The OD-820's drive knob doesn't shunt any signal to ground, so it keeps your tone and pick sensitivity fully intact throughout the entire rotation of the drive knob.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe BYOC Green Pony is based on the Maxon OD-820, but we've added all the obligatory Tubescreamer mods as stock options. On the outside, you'll notice we've added a NORM\/THIN\/FAT switch which allows you to modify the bass response and gain and a LED\/NONE\/Si switch that allows you to modify the clipping. On the inside, we made the Si (silicon) clipping asymmetrical and changed the value of one of the capacitors in a low pass filter so that it doesn't cut as much treble, thus reducing the dreaded mid-range hump. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAnother neat thing about the OD-820 is that it has a JFET input buffer that uses the 2SK246 transistor just like the BOSS FA-1 FET PreAmp.
